WORLD MUSIC SUPERSTAR & FOUNDER OF TROPICALISMO
PLAYS
CLASSIC FAVORITES & SONGS FROM HIS NEW ROCK RELEASE Cê
@
PASADENA CIVIC AUDITORIUM
WEDNESDAY,
NOVEMBER 14, 2007
"Don't miss your chance to see this living legend. Devendra Banhart's idol - Caetano Veloso ("the 65-year-oldBrazillian music dynamo famous for fusing together more traditional South American sounds with a newer Bossa Nova spin") is going on a tour of North America. A true heavyweight, Caetano Veloso is a pop musician/poet/filmmaker/political activist whose stature in the pantheon of international pop musiciansis on a par with that of Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and Lennon/McCartney." - PASTE MAGAZINE
Summary Facts:
“Cê,” a brisk,
spare record that sounds more like indie rock than any of the other, highly
varied music that he has made in the past forty years...As with almost any
genre that Veloso tackles, he has transformed it”
– SASHA FRERE-JONES, New Yorker Magazine
Los Angeles,
CA - Brazilian Nites Productions and KCRW present Caetano Veloso, one of the greatest songwrites of the century, who
appears in Southern California for the fifth time in his 30-year plus career. His debut in 1997 at the Pantages Theatre with Fina Estampa, and his first ever US
Tour with the release of 1999 Grammy Award-Winning Livro garnered widespread critical acclaim. Both concerts were produced by Brazilian
Nites Productions. The internationally renowned artist graces the Pasadena Civic Auditorium,a historic 3000+ seat performance hall built in
1931and one of the most revered performance halls in the nation, on Wednesday,
November 14, 2007 at 8:00 p. m.
“Cê is not a rock album like the ones I
listen to and that interest me: the songs are mine, my voice is still the same,
my hair is greyer than it is black, less curly and always shorter than when it
was really long—or longer than when I decided to wear it short.” –
states Caetano Veloso.
The concert
will include tracks off Veloso’s new release Cê plus traditional beloved classics such as: DESDE QUE O
SAMBA É SAMBA, UM TOM and more.
Musicians include: Caetano Veloso - vocals, nylon and steel guitars,
Pedro Sá - electric guitar, Ricardo Dias Gomes - bass and Rhodes piano and
Marcelo Callado – drums.
“One of Brazil’s, and the world’s, most
graceful and innovative songwriters…He is that rarest of combinations, a
profoundly self-conscious artist who also follows his most playful instincts.
In the truest Brazilian style, his career has blended seduction and
provocation.” – New York Times
A native of
the state of Bahia, Caetano Veloso
is one of the most important figures in contemporary Brazilian music. His polemical poetry is considered a
masterpiece. He writes songs as a
painter paints on his canvas. In fact,
he makes every melody he sings sound luminous and newly discovered. The Grammy Awardwinning artist is perhaps Brazil’s
greatest contemporary songwriter and is among the most significant individuals
to come out of the late 60’s Tropicalia or Tropicalismo movement, which fused
Brazilian pop with rock and roll and avant
garde music resulting in a more international, psychedelic, and
socially aware sound. The foundation of Veloso’s intensely eclectic music is
the rich Bahian musical heritage that was influenced by Carribean, African and
North American pop music and the cool seductive bossa nova sound exemplified by
Joao Gilberto.
Jon Pareles,
from The New York Times best describes Veloso as "one of the greatest songwriters of the century: a master melodist, a lyricist who merges
surreal imagery with a sense of history and a sense of humor, a singer whose
voice radiates tenderness and supple swing and a musician who connects to
traditional music, pop and jazz from all over."
A founder of Brazil’s genre-crossing Tropicália
movement in the ’60s, he continues to blend new styles into the 21st century—as
heard on his new, rock-infused CD. Caetano Veloso’s Cê was released by Nonesuch Records on January 23, 2007. The record
includes twelve original songs by Veloso (vocals, nylon and steel guitars), who
recorded them in the spring and summer of 2006 with a rock band of younger
musicians: Pedro Sá (electric guitar), Ricardo Dias Gomes (bass, Rhodes piano),
and Marcelo Callado (drums); it was produced by Sá and Moreno Veloso.
Additionally, Pedro’s brother, Jonas Sá, sings guest vocals on one track (Cê was released in Brazil in the fall of
2006.)
