DJ Dolores (A.K.A. Helder Aragão), innovator of Brazil’s mangue-beat, draws his inspiration from urban and rural musical styles traditionally shunned by the establishment but favored by the working classes (dance rhythms such as maracatú and song forms such as emboladas). DJ Dolores blends them with loops, breakbeats, and street sounds to create a unique musical cocktail which is culturally & politically meaningful, and irresistibly festive.
Dolores' new band project, Aparelhagem is a typically Brazilian popular expression, which defines a sound system. The emphasis is on the northeastern horn instruments, melancholic themes such as old reggae pieces, percussion, synthesizers, vintage and laptop. During the 2004 European summer, Dj Dolores & Aparelhagem played 14 countries.

MARCOS ARIEL - has dedicated himself to the publicizing of his work through several performances in Brazil and elsewhere, such as the Homage to Tom Jobim show that took place in the Ford Amphitheater in Los Angeles on September 30th, 2005. With original arrangements and innovating form, Marcos Ariel promotes the encounter between Bossa Nova and Jazz, intercalating the be-bop articulations with the swing from samba and choro.
"The program opened with a solo piano set by Marcos Ariel. Starting from a classical viewpoint, he found Jobim linkages in Chopin and Bach, them moved into a curious but ultimately effective connection with Thelonious Monk, adding his own breath vocal to complete mix. The always adventurous Jobim (who died in 1994 at age 67), would surely have loved it all."
Don Heckman - Los Angeles Times, October, 2005

AFRO REGGAE / FAVELA RISING - Born out of desire to counteract the violent drug industry and police oppression, Grupo Cultural AfroReggae – GCAR (“AfroReggae Cultural Group”) was formed in January 1993, initially around AfroReggae Notícias (“AfroReggae News”) – a newspaper designed to add value and disseminate black culture. The newspaper primarily targeted young people interested in reggae, soul, and hip-hop, among other musical genres. The group soon thereafter opened its first Núcleo Comunitário de Cultura (“Culture Community Center”) in the Vigário Geral favela (a slum area) in 1993. In a short period of time, this center was offering its first workshops – dance, percussion, garbage recycling, soccer and capoeira – the foundations for new social projects. GCAR knew exactly what it was seeking with its programs: to offer a cultural and artistic education for adolescents living in slums. By affording local youth more chances of strengthening their citizenship, GCAR hoped to provide a viable path away from entanglement in the prevalent drug trade.

Rob Curto's Forró For All is a band dedicated to the sound of Northeastern Brazil’s traditional “forró pé de serra” dance music, performed with a sensibility born of New York City’s diverse and dynamic musical culture. The San Francisco Bay Guardian wrote “As America’s finest purveyors of the forró sound, New York funksters Rob Curto’s Forró For All combine a wildly imaginative jazz sensibility with their obvious reverence for traditional Brazilian get-down sounds and the fusion is exhilarating”. Rob Curto’s Forró For All made their California debut in January 2007 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
