Founded in 1988, Bale Folclorico da Bahia has twice been named best dance company in Brazil. Its fame arises from the dancers' athleticism and virtuosity in traditional and contemporary dances that blend elements of West African, European (Portuguese) and Brazilian culture.
The Bale Folclorico , one of two such companies, tours for 100-150 performances a year while the other stays in Salvador (the company's home base) for 300 sold-out nights. The all-percussion ensemble of musicians, plus two singers, backs over 20 dancers, whose frenetic, gymnastic movements often have the audience out of their seats and gyrating in the aisles. Their astonishing energy epitomizes the phrase "burning down the house."
